I’m not doctor, but for some reason there’s something about the field that’s always really interested me. I am also an avid-animal lover! You know that in order for you to achieve good health, whole grains and fiber need to be added to your diet plan.  But a lot of the whole grain products don’t look very appealing to the average customer.  But, manufacturers have taken another turn in trying to please the customer.  They have given in to the customer’s demand for healthy foods that taste good too.

When you look at some foods that you enjoy take a look at the label.  The majority of your favorite cereals or cookies now come in 100% whole grain.  Who would have thought it would ever happen?  But it did!  Since the majority of people only average one serving of whole grain every day you can still sneak in some whole grain in a snack food.

Breakfast

When you make pancakes or waffles for breakfast now, you now have the option of using some type of whole grain pancake or waffle mix.  Eat whole grain toast for breakfast rather than white.  And instead of going through the drive-thru for your favorite breakfast food, make your own at home using a whole grain English muffin, low-fat cheese and turkey bacon.  You get the same meal and you get your whole grain in your diet.  And chances are, it is much less expensive for you to make at home.

Lunch

Rather than using white bread to make your lunch us a whole grain option.  There are plenty of them out there and some even make pita bread.  Use a pita pocket and put in turkey, lettuce or any kind of vegetable you enjoy, low-fat cheese and a low calorie dressing.  You have a better lunch that you could have gone out and purchased.

Snacks

If you need a whole grain, low calorie snack during the day, go for 100% whole grain Fig Newtons or eat some Triscuit crackers.  Both have the high fiber you need and the low calories to go with it.

Dinner

If you enjoy pasta for dinner, use whole wheat pasta rather than ordinary processed pasta.  Rice, well, you can try brown or wild rice rather than white rice.  These are both great options to consider when you are planning your meals for the week.

So the next time you wander through the grocery store look at what you are buying and see if there is a whole grain substitute for it.  In most cases there will be.  You will be full and won’t be hungry as quickly and you can lessen your chances of heart disease and cancer at the same time!

Whether you want to lose weight or just want to preserve your sleek shape, boosting your metabolism to a higher rate can always help.  There are several ways that you can use to give your metabolism that extra ump – including exercising earlier in the day – but certain foods can also help boost your metabolism.

Increasing your metabolism means your body burns calories at a higher rate.  So if have high metabolism your body is burning calories even when you aren’t working hard at the gym.  A slow metabolism can cause you to gain weight, because you consume more than your body is burning.

• Add kiwi to your diet – Kiwis contain a lot of vitamin C, but if you add 500 mg of it, you will burn up to 39% more fat while you exercise.

• Take a multivitamin – If you add 120 mcg a day it will increase your metabolism and help you to burn fat quicker.

• Eat tomatoes – Chromium, which is found in tomatoes and in a supplement form, will also help boost the way you burn fat.

If you really want to set in motion your metabolism, you might also try dividing your meals into smaller portions that you can eat more often during the day.  Each time you eat, it increases your metabolism, so as crazy as it may sound, if you eat frequently it can help you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

When it comes to managing your cholesterol it is important that you first know what your cholesterol levels should be.  There is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol and you need to know what the difference is and how you can control both.

Every single day some type of new fad diet is introduced into our lives, but the big question is, are any of these diets really healthy for you?  I guess like anything, some of them are ok and some of them can cause serious trouble for you.

• Raw food diet – This is a diet that is more of a lifestyle change than a way to lose weight; but people will certainly try to use it to lose weight.  You might lose weight, but it is a hard diet to stick to.  Everything you eat is indeed raw so you must chop, slice, dice and puree’ your own meals.  On this diet refined sugars, alcohol and caffeine are completely banned, so say good-bye to your morning coffee, your beer after work and any sweets in between.

• Atkins diet – The main focus of this diet is low-carbs.  It claims that you can lose weight if you eat fewer carbs every meal.  You can have things like omelets, bacon, and cheese.  The foods of this diet are rich to say the least.   If you eat fewer carbs your body will begin to burn its own fat for fuel, therefore causing a person to lose weight.   Most health professionals are concerned with the long term effects of the Atkins diet, so follow it at your own risk.

• The Cabbage Soup diet – Yes, it does exist and yes, it does work, but the health benefits are completely in question.  You eat a bowl of cabbage soup, plus a few other low calorie dishes for one week and the weight is supposed to fall off.  However, there is no nutritional benefit from the cabbage soup diet so you will lose a lot of necessary nutrients needed to maintain good health.

These are only a few of the fad diets that have started a buzz, but keep in mind that losing weight should be healthy for your entire body.  The pounds will begin to drop when you start to eat better and exercise, not just when you are guaranteed to lose 10 pounds in one week by just eating soup.

Do you suffer from being overweight or do you just want to lose a few pounds?  Either way there are diet plans that can help you or as in any case, there are diet plans that can hurt you.  You need to decide what option is right for you if you decide to diet.  Below are a list of some of the diet plans that are available, but choose the one that best suits you and your weight loss goals:

Weight Watchers- This plan is a membership plan and can cost you a lot of money in the long run.  More and more celebrities are promoting the Weight Watchers Program, but it doesn’t mean it is the best plan available for you.  You have to decide if you can afford to buy their meals and maintain your membership for an extended period of time.  This program is designed for those who would like to lose a lot of weight, so if that isn’t you, this is not the option for you.

Jenny Craig – This program works much like Weight Watchers.  You have to be able to afford the meals and the membership and it is designed for those who wish to lose several pounds, not just a few.

Nutrisystem – This program works like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig.  You can lose a lot of weight or a little and their advertisements boast getting the weight off and keeping it off.  It can boost your energy level therefore causing you to lose more weight.  It is a paid membership.

Alli – This plan involves taking a pill when you eat so that you don’t overeat.  It is basically a diet pill that helps you to eat less and feel fuller faster.  The side effects can include gas, diarrhea and pain in the abdomen.  Everyone has a different story to tell about Alli and for some it worked and for some it did not.  So, if you decide Alli is the plan you want to use, then use it with care and learn all the facts about taking it before you start.
